Are you seeing a nephrologist for the first time and don’t know what to expect? We can help! Nephrology appointments can be broken down into three simple steps.
Preparation: Your primary care doctor generally refers you to a nephrologist if your kidney health or blood pressure issues require our high level expertise. It’s ok to ask him/her to explain why you need to see us, in a way you can understand. Rest assured your physician has likely caught things early on and there’s a lot we can do for you with simple, early intervention that typically doesn’t require procedures. In advance of your nephrology appointment we will ask you to get blood or urine tests. Pick any lab that’s covered by your insurance. Our doctor will use the results to assess how well your kidneys are working, what’s wrong if they’re not working 100%, how your blood pressure may be affected, and then develop an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
2. Coming to your appointment: A nephrologist knows how medicines work and which should not be taken if you have kidney problems. You should bring all your medicines, both over the counter and prescriptions, any supplements and vitamins, to your appointment. Yes, we need to see the bottles! Your nephrologist will ask you to share your medical history and your symptoms. He’ll share with you what he learned from your blood and urine tests and his review of your medications. It’s an extensive discussion. If your kidneys are not working as they should, your doctor will offer you potential treatment plans, with the pros and cons of each. These appointments are an opportunity for you to ask questions and actively participate in decisions regarding your kidney health. We’re in this together!
3. Staying on track with your care plan: Your nephrologist may provide you with specific instructions to follow, such as dietary changes, medications adjustments, or lifestyle modifications. It is important to adhere to these instructions to manage your kidney health effectively. Regular follow ups allow your doctor to track your progress, make any necessary changes to your treatment plan, and address any concerns you may have. Compliance with your doctor’s recommendations will have a huge impact on your kidney function and overall well-being.
